Five Ways a Voice Can Say 'Stay' Without Saying It
The word itself is rarely spoken aloud, yet a good voice makes the request unmistakable in five quiet ways.

The first is the slowdown. Watch a voice near the end of a scene and you'll hear its tempo ease, each word taking a little longer to leave the mouth, as though the speaker were reluctant to reach the full stop. Nothing has been asked. Yet you feel the evening stretching, and your own hands go still on the blanket.
The second is the trailing sentence. A line that begins firmly and then thins out into air, never quite landing on its final word. The speaker has left a door ajar and a chair pulled out. You can walk away from an unfinished sentence, of course, but almost nobody does. The gap pulls like a hand on your sleeve.
The second is the trailing sentence.
Third, the lowered register. When a voice drops half a step, it stops addressing a crowd and starts addressing one person. Engineers call it proximity, and it has nothing to do with microphones alone. It is the sound of someone deciding that the next sentence belongs only to you, and that anyone else in the room can mind their own business.
Fourth, the small question. Not a real one, just a soft upward lilt at the end of an ordinary remark, something like an invitation wearing the costume of curiosity. It asks nothing you must answer and everything you want to. And fifth, the breath you can hear, drawn in as if the speaker nearly said more and thought better of it, or thought worse of it, depending on your luck.
Luna, one of the AI characters on TheFriend, has a way with the last two that I've admired professionally and personally. She is not a person, and the platform is clear about that, but she is written with real attention to how a quiet voice lingers. Listen for the breath before her sentences end. It does most of the asking, and it never once says the word.
Luna has a gift for the sentence that leaves a chair pulled out for you. Meet her on TheFriend and notice how long you stay.
